Apple extends the app paradigm
In their quest to app-ify the world, Apple has now release apps for the Mac. Several notes of interest here indeed not the least of which being the ability for Apple to further entrench its users in adopting an “app-only” lifestyle. In other words, if it ain’t an app, I ain’t using it. Not for nothing, this isn’t far off from how many of our clients currently view the app experience. This is clearly evidenced by the amount of times in a day I hear the phrase “there should be an app for that”. Several of the usual suspects
Steve Jobs taking medical leave
Announcements today of Jobs’ medical leave of absence are everywhere. Cook will once again take over for Steve while he is gone. There is no argument that Jobs has been at the helm through an incredible growth period of Apple. With a slew of new things on the horizon, deal with Verizon, iPad 2, iPhone 5, etc, it will be an interesting time to see if the momentum will keep up in his absence. It is unlikely that it won’t. With the tablet wars fully in progress and Android taking off more by the day, 2011 will almost certainly
PalmPad – the latest iPad killer
Trade shows are always interesting. Regardless of industry each trade show has hundreds of booths from companies you know and companies you don’t. All of them however typically share a theme each year. As you walk from one booth to the next you hear hundreds of variations on that theme; how they do it better, how they do it faster, what makes them the best. This year’s CES is absolutely going to be about tablets. It would seem that Palm is coming out with one that appears to be pretty cool. The PalmPad is going to run their WebOS
KNO Tablet set to launch
With the tablet market literally ablaze these days we are sure to have numerous posts about this in 2011. It seems fair then to kick the year off with a tablet that appears to be the first to draw a line in the sand and make their device a one-trick pony; work. The tablet is being sold as a student device that focuses on work and nothing but. In other words, no apps, no fart machines, no GPS to the nearest bar, just class work, homework, and in general learning. The general idea here is to provide a tablet
RIM under $500
Interesting to see that RIM is going to release its new Playbook tablet early 2011 for under $500. Seems that the new way to be is to beat Apple on price. Even more curious is to see what happens with the iPad. Does Apple drop that too? Regardless of what happens on price, if the Bold is any indication of what Blackberry does to save itself, then no one is holding their breath on the new tablet. Could we eat our words? Absolutely. We shall see.
iPad adoption: fastest in history
For the scores of folks out there who desperately want Apple to fall on their faces with the iPad, history books will tell a different story. According to Bernstein Research, the iPad enjoys the fastest adoption rate in electronics history; including the iPhone and the DVD player. This stratospheric success has been the driving force for everyone else to race to second place. That all being said, it is going to be intriguing to see what Apple does next to parlay their iPad success into remaining first in the market once competition opens up. It is going to be
Amazon in the mobile game
While this is not exactly “new” news, it is great news for the mobile marketplace. Retail gigantor Amazon is throwing its hat in the ring by announcing its Android marketplace. This will clearly be huge for the marketplace. Apple is doing a great job of creating a marketplace there is no doubt of that fact. However, a move like this could give them a run for their money. While this is bad for competitors, it is fantastic for consumers. While details on the storefront remain scant, it is likely to follow similar models of revenue share for developers. Good
