Netflix queue relegated to website only
Movie giant Netflix made a puzzling decision recently: let’s make it more annoying to manage DVD queue’s for out customers. Now I suppose this is subjective but they did make it such that you could not manage your queue from anywhere but their website. While I admit I represent a minority of the population that is hyper tech-dependent, here is a newsflash: any product or service available to me that has an option of using it on the iPhone or only a website, the one that provides the mobile access is likely to win my business. In a world
4G is here and poised to blow us all away
That is what Verizon’s chairman/CEO Ivan Seidenberg said recently at CES. He is clearly referring to the impact that the proliferation of 4G networks will have on media companies and their ability to deliver content to anyone, anywhere, at ridiculous speeds. As app makers, this makes us very happy too. The unfortunate side of this is that while this is undoubtedly true, history tells us that it is going to take a bit to roll out. This means that I might have to buy a few more versions of the iPhone prior to having the experience I am envisioning.
Steve Jobs taking medical leave
Announcements today of Jobs’ medical leave of absence are everywhere. Cook will once again take over for Steve while he is gone. There is no argument that Jobs has been at the helm through an incredible growth period of Apple. With a slew of new things on the horizon, deal with Verizon, iPad 2, iPhone 5, etc, it will be an interesting time to see if the momentum will keep up in his absence. It is unlikely that it won’t. With the tablet wars fully in progress and Android taking off more by the day, 2011 will almost certainly
AT&T is buying more bandwidth
So after many, many, many complaints from literally everyone we have ever met who owns an iPhone there may be a light at the end of the tunnel; especially if you live in urban areas. AT&T is set to purchase a fair chunk of extra bandwidth from Qualcomm. This could mean that we won’t drop calls while standing in Rockefeller Center in the middle of Manhattan. It has long been the cost of doing business with Apple to suffer through the numerous network frustrations of AT&T’s network. This is especially noticeable in urban areas where there are a ton
Ergonomic keyboard for iPhone
Well, not exactly but we applaud their efforts. This keyboard takes me back to college days where many students were seen sporting these for real. Gigantic keyboards that had all types of odd shapes and sizes. I never quite got used to them but I love the fact that someone did this on a keyboard. Still clearly does not solve any real ergonomic issues but you can change the color and it is a 3D keyboard so vastly sexier than the standard Apple one.
Netfilx delays release of its Android app
Due to security concerns and fragmentation of the market, Netflix has opted to postpone the release of its Android app until next year. This fear is something discussed here in prior posts as well; reliability of a marketplace with the current hurdles in place for Android. While stats are changing constantly, currently 22.9% of the Android phones don’t have a 2x OS on the phone. Past that, the remaining phones are split roughly evenly between 2.1 and 2.2; slanting by about 4% towards the 2.1. From a development point of view this can be frustrating. To quote them directly:
Finally! Fee-based music services
According to Reuters Apple is working on a music subscription service that would allow users to pay a fee and have unlimited access to songs. How the pricing works and specifics have not been released but it is guessed that it would be based on monthly usage. I imagine something akin to cel minutes would be an appropriate guess. This would be incredibly exciting news for sure. One of my biggest complaints about my gargantuan MP3 collection is that no matter how big it could possibly be, there is always going to be a song I want to hear
